Mahmoud al-Massad
Independent filmmaker Mahmoud al Massad was born to Palestinian parents in Zarqa (Jordan) in 1969. He studied film and art at the Yarmouk Universtiy in Jordan. From 1988 onwards he lived and worked in Romenia, Italy and Germany where he was working in the television and film industry.
Al Massad has been living in The Netherlands since 1995. He worked for Dutch broadcasting companies and returned to independent filmmaking in 1998. He has made several short films and documentaries among which:
30 Meters of Silence (2006): a documentary about childeren growing up in an asylum seeker centre in The Netherlands. 30 Meters of Silence was awarded with the Zilver Hawk (Arab Film Festival Rotterdam)
Shatter Hassan (2002): a documentary following a homeless Morrocan flute player in Utrecht, illustrating a tragic case of failed integration. Shatter Hassan was praised by both national and international critics and awarded with the Golden Hawk and Critic Association Price. Still in 2006 the movie was screened at Cannes (short film corner), will be screened at the Locarno Film Festival and was recommended by German educational media institutions (Fernsehworkshop Hamburg) for eductational work. |
