1. Award winning MIKDAMOT / PPRELIMINARIES by Anat Even new in mec film catalogue
SYNOPSIS
The voice of this film is that of the Israeli author S. Yizhar, who reads the first few chapters of his autobiography "Mikdamot" (“Preliminaries” or “Prefaces” in Hebrew). Director Anat Even (“Detained”/"Asurot") accompanies Yizhar’s voice with her gaze, which continues it and stands against it at one and the same time.
S. Yizhar describes a dramatic day in the life of infant Yizhar, (1917) a story that is a dialogue of love and reckoning with his father, with the founding generation, and the Zionist dream. Even, who sees Yizhar as a member of that founding father generation, examines this score-settling up close through purely visual means. The film traverses Israel’s battered landscape, moving along its bypass roads that masquerade as the highway to Zionism, progressing and retreating in time when in fact it is stuck at the very point that Yizhar, the infant/80 year old, marked in “Mikdamot” – when the Zionist dream is simultaneously realized and shattered.
Yizhar Smilanski (born in 1916- Rehovot, Palestine) is a writer and a teacher, born to a family of farmers and writers who arrived to Palestine with first immigration wave (1880-1903). Member of the Knesset (the Israeli Parliament) until 1967, he was one of the first intellectuals who evoked the 1948 Palestinian exile. Yizhar's literary style is unique in its richness, exploiting the deepest linguistic layers of the Hebrew language. His work covers a period of almost 50 years: whereas his first novels were published before the establishment of the state of Israel, the latter, bearing an autobiographical character, were published in the 90's after a very long period of silence. Amongst his books - "Preliminaries", "Night Convoy".

3. mec film releases Amos Gitai's NEWS FROM HOME in German theatres September 7th
Abandoned by its Palestinian owner in the 1948 war; requisitioned by the Israeli government as vacant; rented to Jewish Algerian immigrants in 1956; purchased by a university professor who undertakes its transformation into a three-story house in 1980…
This West Jerusalem building is no longer the microcosm it once was 25 years ago. Its inhabitants dispersed, this common space has disintegrated, but remains both an emotional and physical center at heart of the Israeli-Palestinian situation. Concrete reality has transformed into scattered stories and memories. A new identity, a new diaspora, have evolved.
With NEWS FROM HOME/NEWS FROM HOUSE, Amos Gitai completes the trilogy which began with 1980’s HOUSE and continued in 1998’S A HOUSE IN JERUSALEM. Creating a sort of human archeology, Gitai explores the relationships between the house’s inhabitants, past and present, between Israelis and Palestinians. Each in his or her own way becomes a sign of the region’s, the world’s, destiny.
